Dive into the heart of Colorado's shortgrass prairie with a journey through the expansive Pawnee National Grassland, a 193,000-acre protected area in northeastern Colorado. This tour offers a rare opportunity to explore a rapidly disappearing ecosystem and to search for some of Colorado's most iconic grassland bird species. Participants will have the chance to spot the Mountain Plover, Chestnut-collared and Thick-billed Longspur, Long-billed Curlew, Cassin's, Grasshopper, and Brewer's Sparrow, as well as the Ferruginous and Swainson's Hawk. Special highlights include visits to Crow Valley and Pawnee Buttes, where migrant passerines and raptors can be observed respectively.
This bird safari not only aims to fill gaps in participants' life lists but also provides an in-depth look into the rich natural and cultural history of the area. With warm clothing, close-toed shoes, and binoculars (provided if needed), guests will be well-prepared for a day of discovery and learning. While sightings of specific species cannot be guaranteed, every effort will be made to locate the birds on each participant's wish list, ensuring a memorable and educational experience in one of Colorado's most unique landscapes.
