Full description

In this workshop, participants have the opportunity to create their own classic French Chef, vegetable slicer, cleaver, or utility/hunting knife using the reductive (stock-removal) technique.

Beginning with a raw, rectangular piece of annealed tool steel, attendees cut, shape, and polish it into a fully functional kitchen blade, allowing for customization and scaling of the design to ensure a perfect fit for their hand. After the initial session, the unfinished knife undergoes hardening and tempering at Craftsman Ave before participants return for the second session.

During the second session, held the following week, participants craft a custom brass-pinned hardwood handle for their knife and have the opportunity to polish the blade to their desired finish—whether it be shiny or rugged. The final step involves sharpening the blade to a razor's edge using custom sharpening jigs, allowing for as much drama as participants desire.

Any restrictions to participate?

Age: 18+
Experience level: This course is designed for beginners with no prior metal fabrication experience.

Who can you accommodate for?

Children: This experience is recommended for participants who are at least 18 years old, because of the use of power tools, however, minors are welcome to join as long as they have a parent or guardian there to participate and supervise throughout the workshop.
Individuals with disabilities: The workshop is not wheelchair accessible, however, service animals are allowed.
Pets: Well-behaved pets, comfortable with loud noises, are welcome.

What to expect on the day of the experience?

Duration: Two, 4 hour sessions. The time for each session can vary by 30 minutes or so depending on the class size.
What’s included: All tools and building materials needed to make a stunning custom knife, as well as an expert instructor to coach you through the workshop. You will use various hand tools to shape your knife, including hacksaws, files, and sanding blocks. You’ll also use belt sanders and rotary tools.
Who will be present: You will have an instructor with you at all times as well as up to 8 total participants.
Spectators: No spectators are allowed, everyone must have a reservation.
Photo/ video: Photos are encouraged!
Specific rules to follow: Your instructor will go over all the safety rules on the day of the workshop.

How to prepare?

Weather dependency: This is an indoor experience.
Arrival: Plan to arrive 15 minutes in advance.
Parking: There is street parking available near the workshop.
What to wear: Comfortable clothing, you don’t mind getting dirty, and closed toed shoes are required.
What to bring: No need to bring anything with you! You will be provided with all the tools, safety equipment, and materials needed for an awesome experience.
Restrooms: Restrooms are available onsite.

Returns, exchanges and cancellation

Unused Experience Vouchers can be returned within 30 days for a full refund to the original purchaser, no questions asked.

If you have any unused Experience Vouchers, you can exchange them for anything else in our marketplace, no matter when. If you choose an experience that's more expensive, you'll need to pay the difference, but if you choose one that costs less, you'll receive a credit towards your next booking.

No refunds are allowed once the experience is booked, but you can reschedule up to 1 week before your experience, for a date within a year of the original booking. To reschedule, contact the experience provider directly. No-shows or rescheduling less than 1 week in advance means losing the value of your experience.
