Full description

The journey begins with a short uphill hike through Rocky Mountain forest trails before boarding a vintage Atlas K 2.5 Ton Locomotive and refurbished mine cars. As the train winds its way through the mountains, your conductor shares stories of mining life and showcases historic equipment, setting the stage for what’s ahead.
The highlight of the experience is the Centurion Level of the Phoenix Mine—its oldest section—where a lantern-lit, 400-foot walk reveals dramatic cave-like chambers, glowing fluorescent rocks, and rich stories of Colorado’s mining history. After exploring the depths of the dark mine, ride the train back down the tracks and stroll back through the forest path, with time to browse handmade keepsakes at the 1950’s bus gift shop. This Idaho Springs mine train and underground tour offers a rare chance to pair mountain scenery with hands-on history for an unforgettable glimpse into Colorado’s gold mining heritage.
