Full description

This half-day adventure blends a little bit of everything—nature, history, and hands-on discovery. It begins with a short scenic hike through the Rocky Mountains before boarding a refurbished mine cart for a guided train ride through the forest. Along the way, your conductor shares fascinating stories about Colorado’s mining past and the tools that powered it. The train then delivers you to the Centurion Level of the Phoenix Mine, where a lantern-lit walk reveals dramatic cave formations, fluorescent rock, and a glimpse into the tough but remarkable world of 19th-century miners.
From there, the experience continues with a guided tour of the Phoenix Main Level, an easy underground walk where you’ll see authentic gold veins glistening in the rock. The adventure wraps up with gold panning—your chance to swirl and sift for real gold flakes and gems, either in a mountain stream during warmer months or in a covered tank year-round. Capping it all off, you can browse handmade keepsakes at the quirky 1950s bus gift shop before heading back down the trail.
