Whiskey tastes better when you know where it came from, and this tour shows you exactly that. Inside the 123-year-old Paymaster Building in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, a knowledgeable guide leads you through New York City's oldest whiskey distillery and the first to open in the city since Prohibition. You'll see how handmade bourbon and rye come to life, from milling and mashing the grain to fermentation and distillation in traditional copper pot stills.

Then it's on to the barrel room, where the whiskey rests in oak and develops its deep color and flavor. The 45-minute tour ends right there among the barrels with a guided tasting of four whiskeys from the core lineup. • Parking: On-street parking is available, as well as paid parking in the nearby Brooklyn Navy Yard garage. The closest subway is the F train at York Street
• What to wear: Comfortable shoes for stairs and standing
• What to bring: Valid photo ID
