Experience the natural wonder of bioluminescence during a three-hour kayak tour around San Juan Island. This tour, suitable for beginners, takes you out on the water after sunset, offering a unique opportunity to paddle through areas where the water literally glows. Led by knowledgeable biologist/naturalist guides, you’ll gain insight into the phenomena that light up the sea and learn about the local marine ecosystem in a serene, nighttime setting.

The adventure begins at Friday Harbor with a comprehensive on-beach kayak lesson to prep you for the night's excursion. Once on the water, the tour covers 1 to 2 miles at a relaxed pace, focusing on areas known for vibrant bioluminescent activity. You’ll have the chance to see marine life outlined in light with every paddle stroke. The tour wraps up back at Friday Harbor, completing a memorable journey into one of nature’s most fascinating displays.

Any restrictions to participate?

  • Age: All ages are welcome.
  • Health limitations: Not recommended for individuals with severe allergies to insects or severe medical conditions that could require immediate medical attention.

Who can you accommodate for?

  • Children: All participants must pay to participate, children included.
  • Individuals with disabilities: The activity may be challenging for individuals with mobility impairments due to the need to get in and out of kayaks; please contact in advance for accommodations.
  • Pets: Sorry, no pets allowed on the kayak tours to ensure safety and manageability.

What to expect on the day of the experience?

  • Duration: The entire experience lasts approximately 3 hours, with about 1.5 hours spent on the water.
  • What’s included: Includes high visibility kayaks, safety gear, and professional guidance from biologist/naturalist guides.
  • Who will be present: Each tour is led by expert guides with extensive training and knowledge in local ecology and safety. Group sizes are kept small, up to 12 participants for a more intimate experience.
  • Spectators: The nature of the activity does not allow for spectators. Participants must be registered.
  • Photo/ video: Participants are encouraged to bring waterproof cameras to capture the luminous phenomenon, but should ensure they can manage them safely without risk of water damage.

How to prepare?

  • Weather dependency: The tour is subject to weather conditions and may be rescheduled in case of inclement weather such as rain or unfavorable wind conditions.
  • Arrival: Participants should arrive at the designated meeting place at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start time to ensure timely check-in and briefing.
  • Parking: Available at the meeting location; follow signs and instructions for kayak tour parking.
  • What to wear: Comfortable clothing suited for the weather but prepared for cool temperatures at night. Water-resistant outerwear is recommended.
  • What to bring:
    • Required to bring a headlamp or flashlight, but use during the tour should be minimal to enjoy the bioluminescence.
    • Water bottle, additional snacks if desired, and personal medications if needed.
    • A change of clothes for after the tour might be a good idea in case you get wet.

  • Remember that bioluminescence can vary in intensity and is not guaranteed. The experience is also about enjoying the night paddle and the environment. Patience and a quiet approach can enhance the chance of a spectacular sighting.

Returns, exchanges and cancellation

Unused Experience Vouchers can be returned within 30 days for a full refund to the original purchaser, no questions asked.

If you have any unused Experience Vouchers, you can exchange them for anything else in our marketplace, no matter when. If you choose an experience that's more expensive, you'll need to pay the difference, but if you choose one that costs less, you'll receive a credit towards your next booking.

No refunds are allowed once the experience is booked, but you can reschedule up to 30 days before your experience, for a date within a year of the original booking. To reschedule, contact the experience provider directly. No-shows or rescheduling less than 30 days in advance means losing the value of your experience.
